Silesia, year 1962, we’re in the middle of the winter of the century. In the nearby coal mine we meet two main characters: a miner called Zbyszek and Alina – a crane operator. Shrunken from the cold, they try to survive some of the worst, darkest days of the year in this hostile world. In such a place man feels his weakness and appreciates the merits of civilization. We meet Zbyszek at the most critical moment in his life. He wants to kill himself because he is experiencing a heartbreak. Cold and darkness overwhelmed him completely. In this vital moment, thanks to the television lecturer, he becomes obsessed by the idea of the life force enchanted in coal.
